Artistic exhibition “90 Days of You. Gwyneth Ho” by curator saar_voirvivre
We are delighted to host the exhibition “90 days of you. Gwyneth Ho” in the law and criminology department library as part of Human Rights Week at Ghent University.
The exhibition is a profound tribute to a profound tribute to friendship, resilience, and the pursuit of freedom. The exhibition, featuring 90 artworks by artist saar_voirvivre, is a dedication to her friendship with Gwyneth Ho – A Hong Kong social activist and former reporter who was convicted of subversion in May 2024 after a long detention period in Hong Kong of over a thousand days. Gwyneth Ho worked for several news outlets, including Stand News, BBC Chinese, and government-run broadcaster RTHK and is an alumna of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Saar_voirvivre is an alumna of the University of Ghent and the University of Amsterdam (UvA). She is currently working as an assistant at the faculty of law of the UGent.
Artist saar_voirvivre and Gwyneth Ho formed a deep bond during their time as classmates and roommates at the University of Amsterdam in 2018 where they both studied journalism. After Gwyneth Ho returned to Hong Kong in 2020 to participate in the legislative council primaries, she was charged under the Hong Kong national security law and detained. During this period, saar_voirvivre used her paintings to narrate her view on their friendship and pay tribute to the relentless spirit of those fighting for Hong Kong’s democracy. The paintings should be read as a long-illustrated letter to Gwyneth and refer to the initially set 90-day case that extended to over a thousand days of detention for Gwyneth.
The exhibition’s dominant colour is blue, symbolising Gwyneth’s name (藍), integrity, resilience, purpose, and spirit. This colour symbolises for Saar_voirvivre the many different emotions that go together with the story of their friendship. Blue symbolises beauty, melancholy, and the sparks of hope and joy. It is a colour with incredible depth and a perfect fit for this story.
From the 9th of December till the 20th of December, the exhibition “90 Days of You. Gwyneth Ho” can be visited for free at the Faculty Library Law & Criminology (RBIB). Opening hours Monday – Thursday (8.30 am- 9 pm) / Friday (8.30 am- 4.30 pm).Campus Aula, Universiteitstraat 4. Free entrance, no registration required.
